On July 28, 2022, the New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners (NJSBPT) determined that a New Jersey licensed physical therapist (PT) may be employed by a non-profit corporation or a corporation owned by a non-licensee.  In each case, however, the PT must:

• Act independently in their practice of physical therapy including but not limited to the type of physical therapy services rendered, billing for those physical therapy services, and setting their fee schedule; and
• Adhere to the statutes and regulations governing the practice of physical therapy in the state of New Jersey.

To the extent that the NJSBPT is charged with overseeing licenses and regulating the field physical therapy, the statement is good news for groups such as Push to Walk, a non-profit based in Oakland, New Jersey who sought the clarification, that would like to expand the reach and availability of PT services.
